Pool Cost Guide

How much does an inground pool cost in Utah?

Utah pool prices are driven by labor (about 5–16% below the US average depending on the metro), rock and caliche in Washington County, a short construction season north of Cedar City, and a permit process that runs through each city's building division.

Statewide, a medium inground pool with a basic deck runs about $55K – $106K installed.

Verify the builder before you sign

Utah Code 58-55 requires anyone who builds or advertises pool construction to hold a contractor license from the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). Look the company up by name or license number, confirm the status is active, and check that the classification covers swimming pools (S370 Swimming Pool Contractor, or a general building license). Ask for a certificate of liability insurance and workers' compensation.

Barrier, permit and inspection basics

Utah adopts the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code. A residential pool needs a 48-inch barrier with self-closing, self-latching gates, or an ASTM-rated automatic safety cover where the local jurisdiction allows it as the barrier. Door alarms or self-closing doors are required where the house forms part of the barrier.

Permits are issued by the city (St. George's pool building permit is $200 on the FY27 fee schedule; Salt Lake County's unincorporated areas charge a valuation-based fee that is $456 at a $25,000 valuation). Expect inspections at excavation/steel, plumbing and electrical rough-in, bonding, and final barrier. Washington County issued 576 residential pool permits in the 12 months to July 2026, with a median declared value of $90,000.

Season and timing

St. George builds nearly year-round; the busiest permit month is March and search interest peaks in June. Along the Wasatch Front the practical construction window is April through October, and shotcrete and plaster need frost-free nights, so a pool contracted in winter is usually dug in spring and swimming by midsummer.

Frequently asked

What is the average cost of a pool in Utah?
For a medium inground pool with basic equipment and a 600 square foot deck, our model shows roughly $55,000 to $120,000 for fiberglass and $70,000 to $110,000 for gunite in St. George, with Salt Lake and Utah County within a few percent of that. Washington County's median declared permit value is $90,000.
Do I need a permit for a pool in Utah?
Yes. Any inground pool needs a building permit, plus electrical and plumbing permits, from the city or county building division. Your builder normally pulls them.
How do I check a pool builder's license in Utah?
Search the DOPL licensee lookup by business name. Confirm active status, a classification that covers swimming pools, and no unresolved disciplinary actions.
Does rock add to the cost in St. George?
Often. Caliche and sandstone are common in Washington County. We show rock excavation as a separate risk line of roughly $3,000 to $8,000, and heavy rock can exceed $15,000.
When is the best time to sign a pool contract in Utah?
Fall and early winter. Builders have schedule room, permits clear before the March rush, and the pool is ready for the first hot week.
